Kurt Williams Concludes Radiation Treatment for Prostate Cancer: What Lies Ahead?

Kurt Williams received hugs and took pictures with the amazing team at Sentara’s Radiation-Oncology department on the final day of his radiation treatment. Over five weeks, he underwent daily radiation sessions.

The Journey Begins: Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Last December, a biopsy at Urology of Virginia confirmed that Kurt had prostate cancer. Despite another phase remaining in his treatment plan, he celebrated the completion of radiation by ringing the bell hard as he stepped out of the radiation chamber.

The Next Step: Seed Implant Procedure

Kurt’s next treatment step involves a seed implant. Dr. Mark Shaves, an EVMS Radiation Oncologist, explained the procedure. “We will place several radioactive seeds into your prostate through needles. This takes about an hour and a half in the operating room.”

These seeds, tiny rice-like pellets encased in titanium, release low levels of radiation. This treatment is necessary because one of Kurt’s biopsy samples was deemed aggressive. “You have what we call high-risk disease,” said Dr. Shaves. “This means you’re at a higher risk of the cancer returning in your pelvis. We use the seeds to deliver a concentrated dose of radiation directly to the prostate, achieving a high dose safely.”

What to Expect After Seed Implant Surgery

Dr. Shaves outlined what Kurt should expect post-surgery. “Immediately, there will be little discomfort from the needle insertion sites. Within a few weeks, you’ll notice more frequent urination and an increased urge to go, including getting up more at night.” When asked if these symptoms would be temporary, Dr. Shaves reassured, “Yes. These symptoms typically peak three to four weeks after the implant and gradually decrease over the next two to six months.”

Looking Forward: Celebrating Milestones

While Kurt’s seed implant surgery is scheduled in about four weeks, he is currently focused on celebrating the end of this significant chapter in his treatment journey.
